August Most Wins Market: Phillies Still the Value as the Rays Take Control
August Most Wins Market Update: The Opening Card Is Gaining Traction
When we opened the August Most Regular Season Wins market, the goal wasn't simply to identify which team was most likely to win.
We wanted to use our 2,000-simulation model to find where our estimated probabilities disagreed with the betting market.
Now that we're 10 days into August, this is where the exercise starts getting really fun.
We have actual August results to incorporate, updated post-trade deadline team ratings, fewer games remaining and a market that has been adjusting every day.
More importantly, we can start grading the original thesis.
Our favorite position on the opening card was Philadelphia at +1100. We also liked Atlanta at +1200, identified Toronto at +5000 as a team to watch, and made Texas +1000 our fade.
There is still plenty of baseball left, but that opening card has gained some traction.
So let's rerun the month and ask the same question we asked on August 1:
Given everything we know today, where is the price wrong now?
The Current August Most Wins Board
| Team | August Record | BW Probability | BW Fair Odds | DK Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tampa Bay Rays | 8-1 | 32.15% | +211 | +210 |
| Philadelphia Phillies | 7-3 | 22.95% | +336 | +800 |
| Chicago Cubs | 7-2 | 8.85% | +1030 | +475 |
| Atlanta Braves | 6-3 | 7.50% | +1233 | +1300 |
| Boston Red Sox | 6-3 | 5.40% | +1752 | +800 |
| New York Yankees | 4-4 | 4.15% | +2310 | +3500 |
| San Diego Padres | 7-3 | 3.60% | +2678 | +1000 |
| Milwaukee Brewers | 6-4 | 3.00% | +3233 | +2200 |
| Detroit Tigers | 6-2 | 2.40% | +4067 | +1600 |
| Toronto Blue Jays | 6-4 | 2.40% | +4067 | +1800 |
| Texas Rangers | 5-4 | 2.30% | +4248 | +1900 |
| Arizona Diamondbacks | 6-4 | 1.55% | +6352 | +2000 |
| New York Mets | 6-3 | 1.10% | +8991 | +1800 |
| Houston Astros | 5-4 | 0.75% | +13233 | +6000 |
| Cincinnati Reds | 4-4 | 0.65% | +15285 | +3000 |
| St. Louis Cardinals | 5-4 | 0.55% | +18082 | +5500 |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | 2-7 | 0.30% | +33233 | +8000 |
The remaining teams each have less than a 0.30% probability in the current Basewinner simulations.
⭐ BW Best Value: Philadelphia Phillies +800
This remains the headline.
Philadelphia was our favorite position when we opened this market at +1100.
The Phillies have since gone 7-3, putting themselves exactly where we hoped they would be.
But here's the surprising part:
We still think they're substantially underpriced.
Our updated simulations give Philadelphia a 22.95% probability of finishing August with the most wins in baseball.
That translates to Basewinner fair odds of approximately:
+336
DraftKings is offering:
+800
The market-implied probability at +800 is only 11.11%.
So despite Philadelphia already winning seven games, our estimated probability is still more than double the probability implied by the current market price.
The original +1100 position has gained traction.
At +800, we're still interested.
🎯 Tampa Bay: The Market Caught Up
There is another side to this exercise that is just as important as finding value.
Sometimes the market gets it exactly right.
Tampa Bay is now 8-1 in August and has become the DraftKings favorite at +210.
Our simulations agree that the Rays should be the favorite.
BW probability: 32.15%
BW fair odds: +211
DraftKings: +210
You almost couldn't price it any closer.
Tampa Bay is the most likely winner of the August market according to our simulations.
That doesn't necessarily make Tampa Bay a bet.
This distinction is critical:
The most likely outcome and the best betting value are not necessarily the same thing.
Tampa Bay may be more likely to win than Philadelphia.
But at +210 versus a BW fair price of +211, the Rays are almost perfectly priced.
Philadelphia at +800 versus +336 fair is a completely different proposition.
📈 Opening Value Check-In: Atlanta +1300
Atlanta was another team we liked on the opening card at +1200.
The Braves have responded with a 6-3 August record and remain very much alive.
Our current simulations give Atlanta a 7.50% probability, corresponding to fair odds of approximately +1233.
DraftKings is now offering +1300.
That's essentially a fair market.
The Braves have done what we needed them to do, but unlike Philadelphia, the current price has largely converged with our model.
We can like an original position without automatically recommending another bet at today's price.
👀 Watch Team Check-In: Toronto
Toronto was one of our watch teams on the opening card, and the Blue Jays have done enough to justify that designation.
They are 6-4 through their first 10 August games.
But the price has changed dramatically.
Toronto was +5000 when we highlighted the Blue Jays as a team worth monitoring.
They are now +1800.
Our current simulations give Toronto a 2.40% probability of winning the overall August market, equivalent to fair odds of approximately +4067.
So the original watch has gained traction on the field—but the current price has moved beyond where we would want to buy.
That's an important part of this exercise.
A team can validate why we were interested initially without automatically remaining attractive at every subsequent price.
Toronto stays on the radar. At +1800, we're watching rather than buying.
💣 BW Bomb: New York Yankees +3500
If we're looking for one big number to take a swing at, the Yankees are the BW Bomb.
New York is only 4-4 in August, which has helped push the price all the way out to +3500.
Our simulations aren't nearly as pessimistic.
The Yankees still have a 4.15% probability of finishing August with the most wins in baseball.
That corresponds to Basewinner fair odds of approximately:
+2310
DraftKings is offering:
+3500
We're certainly not suggesting the Yankees are likely to win this market. They aren't.
That's why we're getting 35-1.
But our job isn't to find certainty. It's to find prices where the probability being offered by the market is better than our estimated probability.
At +3500, the Yankees qualify.
💣 BW Bomb: Yankees +3500
🚫 BW Fade: Chicago Cubs +475
Chicago has been excellent.
The Cubs are 7-2, which explains why DraftKings has shortened them all the way to +475.
But our model isn't nearly as aggressive.
BW probability: 8.85%
BW fair odds: +1030
DraftKings: +475
The market price implies approximately a 17.39% probability.
Our simulations come in at just 8.85%.
That makes Chicago one of the clearest examples on today's board of a team whose early August results appear to be receiving too much weight in the market.
The Cubs are playing great baseball.
We just don't want to pay +475 for it.
📉 Opening Fade Check-In: Texas
Texas was our fade when we opened the market.
The Rangers were +1000 at the time.
They're now 5-4 in August and have drifted to +1900.
Our updated simulations give Texas only a 2.30% probability of finishing with the most wins in baseball this month.
BW fair odds: +4248
DraftKings: +1900
So while the market has moved in our direction, it still hasn't moved far enough for the model.
The original fade thesis remains intact.
Opening Card Scorecard
| Opening Call | Opening Price | August Record | Current DK | Current BW View |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⭐ Phillies — Best Value | +1100 | 7-3 | +800 | Still Best Value — BW +336 |
| 📈 Braves — Value | +1200 | 6-3 | +1300 | Approximately fair — BW +1233 |
| 👀 Blue Jays — Watch | +5000 | 6-4 | +1800 | Watch, don't chase — BW +4067 |
| 🚫 Rangers — Fade | +1000 | 5-4 | +1900 | Still overpriced — BW +4248 |
The Board Has Changed. The Process Hasn't.
This might be my favorite part of updating this market every day.
We're not trying to defend the positions we made on August 1.
We're updating the information and asking the model the same question again.
Philadelphia was value then. It's still value now.
Atlanta was value then. The market has largely caught up.
Toronto was worth watching. They've played well, but the price has gotten away from us.
Texas was our fade. They've drifted from +1000 to +1900, but our model still wants a substantially larger price.
Tampa Bay has gone 8-1 and become the legitimate favorite—at almost exactly the price our model says they should be.
And the Yankees have emerged as today's BW Bomb at +3500.
That's how we want this series to work.
Results change. Probabilities change. Prices change.
Our job is to keep measuring the difference between probability and price.
And we're not done today.
Coming Next: August Division Winner Value Board
Next we'll take these same updated simulations and attack the August division winner markets.
Instead of asking who will post the most wins in all of baseball, we'll break the market into all six divisions and compare the Basewinner probability and fair price for every team against the current DraftKings odds.
We'll identify a BW Best Value and BW Fade in every division and see where the market may be telling a different story than the simulations.
With more teams legitimately alive in those smaller pools, there are some fascinating discrepancies developing.
Stay tuned.
August records and DraftKings prices reflect the current August 11, 2026 market. Basewinner probabilities are based on 2,000 simulations of the August schedule.
