August Most Wins Market: Opening Card

One of my favorite betting markets each month is Most Regular Season Wins.

On the surface it seems simple.

Pick the team you think will have the best month.

But that's not how I approach it.

At Basewinner, the goal isn't simply identifying the most likely winner.

The goal is determining whether the price accurately reflects each team's true probability.

Every time the simulation engine runs, the process starts by rebuilding the Basewinner component ratings using the latest available data.

Those ratings evaluate every club's:

Only after those ratings are rebuilt do I simulate every remaining August game 2,000 times.

That process allows the schedule—not just overall team strength—to influence each club's probability of finishing the month with the most wins.

Sometimes the best team has the best price.

Often it doesn't.

That's where the opportunities begin.

⭐ Basewinner Star: Philadelphia Phillies (+1100)

If one team immediately jumped off the page, it was Philadelphia.

The simulations give the Phillies a 22.50% probability of finishing August with the most wins.

That translates to Basewinner Fair Odds of +344.

Caesars is currently offering +1100.

That's one of the largest positive pricing discrepancies on the board.

The Phillies aren't simply benefiting from a strong overall rating.

The simulation engine also likes how their August schedule lines up.

That's an important distinction.

Rather than guessing which clubs have favorable schedules, every remaining game is played out thousands of times.

The Phillies came out on top.

⭐ Basewinner Value: Atlanta Braves (+1200)

Atlanta provides another interesting opportunity.

The simulations give the Braves an 8.15% chance of finishing August with the most wins, implying fair odds of approximately +1127.

Caesars is offering +1200.

What I found especially interesting is that both the Phillies and Braves appear as value plays.

At first glance that might seem unusual.

But because they don't play one another during August, they're not taking wins away from each other.

The simulations independently project favorable paths for both clubs.

It's another reminder that Basewinner isn't simply producing power rankings.

It's measuring how team quality and schedule interact over the course of an entire month.

👀 Basewinner Watch List: Toronto Blue Jays (+5000)

Toronto may have been the most difficult team to evaluate.

The simulations currently give the Blue Jays a 5.30% probability of finishing August with the most wins, implying fair odds around +1787.

On paper, +5000 looks like outstanding value.

But context matters.

Toronto has consistently been mentioned as a potential seller at the trade deadline.

If meaningful contributors are moved over the next few days, today's component ratings won't accurately reflect the club that actually takes the field in August.

That's why Toronto lands on the Watch List instead of becoming an official play.

The model likes them.

Now we'll see what the front office does.

💣 Basewinner Bomb: Athletics (+15000)

Every month I look to see whether any true longshots are priced well below their simulated probability.

This month, the Athletics stand out.

The simulations give the A's approximately a 1.70% chance of finishing August with the most wins.

That implies fair odds around +5782.

The market is offering +15000.

That's exactly the type of longshot I classify as a Basewinner Bomb.

Another reason I like the Athletics here is organizational direction.

Unlike several clubs expected to sell aggressively, Oakland has indicated that it wants to continue building around its young core rather than simply dismantling the roster because it's trade deadline week.

That reduces one layer of uncertainty that exists with several other longshot teams.

Will they win August often?

No.

Do they need to?

Also no.

The goal isn't finding the most likely winner.

It's finding teams whose chances are better than the market believes.

🚫 Basewinner Fade: Texas Rangers (+900)

The Rangers represent one of the largest disagreements between my simulations and the betting market.

The model gives Texas approximately a 3.30% chance of finishing August with the most wins.

That's equivalent to fair odds of roughly +2930.

Caesars is currently offering +900.

That's a substantial difference.

Could Texas have a terrific month?

Absolutely.

Would I pay +900 based on the current probabilities?

Not according to the simulations.

The Trade Deadline Is Part of the Process

August presents a unique challenge.

These simulations are generated before the trade deadline.

That means they accurately reflect today's rosters—but not necessarily tomorrow's roster.

That's why I consider today's article the Opening Card, not the final answer.

As soon as the trade deadline passes, I'll rebuild every team's component ratings - using the updated rosters before running another set of 2,000 simulations.

That's an important distinction.

We don't adjust the probabilities.

We rebuild the ratings.

Then we let the simulations determine how much those roster changes actually matter.

What's Coming Next

I'm especially excited about the next update.

Last month, DraftKings posted both Monthly Most Wins and Division Winner markets shortly after the trade deadline.

The Basewinner simulation engine is now capable of evaluating both.

If DraftKings posts those division odds again, the next update will include not only an updated Most Wins board but also our first Division Value Board, comparing Basewinner's simulated division probabilities against the betting market.

That should make the first post-trade-deadline update one of the most interesting pieces of content we've produced.

One final note: the opening prices referenced in this article are from Caesars Sportsbook, which was the first sportsbook to post August monthly win odds. If additional markets become available after the trade deadline, they'll be incorporated into the next update.
